No Matter What - Happy Hour

Happy Hour Pt. 2 - No Matter What. This is part two of a multi-part series of fun happy hour music with a garage rock feel. This second hour of the night is decidedly more power pop and not quite as raw as the first set. It just sort of flowed that way and like before the music comes from several decades. Lots of classics and lots of personal favorites because after all it's my happy hour.  The title of the mix comes from both the opening and closing songs.

60 Albums 1974

Another year, another 60 favorite albums from my collection.

My first year as a civilian after four years in the Navy. Went to Mardi Gras in February during the gas crises. Remember the long lines waiting to get gas? It was a good time to take a long trip but what a time we had. I made a mix several years back that contained a lot of the music we had in the car for that trip. I should post that up here some time.

I don't think this was a particular good year for music. A lot of the money I spend on albums that year was for music I had missed over the past few years. I was also listening to a lot of jazz and blues and also discovering reggae.  Saw Tom Waits down at the Bijou Cafe and a lot of acts at the Spectrum... Clapton, Dylan, The Band, Santana, Zappa among others. That was the last time I've ever been to an arena for a concert. It's been strictly bars, clubs, parks, and theaters and to see music for me since then.

Love Hurts - Heartache

Love Hurts- Heartache. This is the fourth mix in this new Heartache series. There wasn't any intent to make a mix with a dominant early 70s feel but sometimes you just go with the flow and things turn out a certain way. This one evolved into a 70s mix with a set of 80s and 90s songs in the middle before going back to the late 60s and early 70s while ending with some soul music from the late 70s and early 80s.

Readings - In the Garden of Beasts

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin is a nonfiction book that felt like a novel. It was a very vivid portrait of Berlin in the mid 1930s during the rise of Hitler and the Nazis as described through the experiences of the American ambassador to Germany and his daughter who happened to like dating SS officers including the head of the Gestapo and a Russian spy.  It reads like a political thriller. It was very frightening to see the political transformation of the German people into Nazis through the eyes of these Americans.

I was interested in this book because over the past couple of years I've been reading the series of Philip Kerr novels about a Berlin private detective where much of the stories takes place in 1930s Berlin over the course of the seven books I've read so far. A lot of the places and incidents described in the novels are also in the Erik Larson book. This book was on a lot of best of 2011 lists and I can see why. Highly recommended.

I had also enjoyed reading Erik Larson's last book The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America.

60 Albums 2000

60 favorite albums released in 2000 from my collection. It was very difficult picking out an album for the top of the list and I finally choose a perfect collection of American roots music from a very cool movie.  I was a very good year for roots music with wonderful releases from Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt, Johnny Cash and the North Mississippi Allstars in my top ten. There were so many good albums that once again I couldn't stop at 60 and actually doubled the list to 120. Another year of variety with Radiohead almost taking the top spot with an album that I didn't really take to at the time of it's release but has grown on me over the years. I'm looking forward to putting together some mixes from this list.

60 Albums 1973

Back again to the 60 favorite albums in my collection lists from each year. A lot of my all time favorite albums came out in 1973. It was also my last year in the Navy so it was a big life transition year of leaving the military and preparing for college.

I don't think I purchased much music in 1973 but I made up for it the following year getting what I had missed. This was a year that several of my favorite artists of the time were releasing multiple albums. Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, David Bowie,  and Roxy Music all have two albums on this list. This was certainly a year for what would eventually be known as Classic Rock. I still listen to much of this list today.

These mixes follow each other nicely on my iPod and was really assembled with the intention of a 60 song playlist as part of my 60@60 theme... 60 love songs. How Can I Tell You - Heartache

How Can I Tell You - Heartache.
Love songs. Break-up songs. Rock 'n' roll has always been about the love songs. I made this mix about two years ago and posted in my usual places. It was also one of my short lived Mixes of the Week on Facebook. Now it's here as the first mix in the Heartache series. I wanted to be inclusive of all kinds of love songs and people can be so much in love to cause heartache and of course the lack of love or the loss of love certainly causes heartache.

Opens with one of my favorite Cat Stevens songs. Lots of favorites actually including the wonderful Colin Blunstone who had a fantastic but not very commercially successful solo career after leaving The Zombies. What a voice.

This is a mix of different songs from different periods and groupings of small sets that go together. As always you can listen to this mix using the Mixcloud link below.
