Mix Categories

I've made hundreds of mixes during the last several decades and over time I've developed a category system for tracking these mixes. Most of them can be put in either a theme or a time frame category.

The Decade Mixes.  There are some songs on the mixes from a little before or a little after the stated years. It is more for style. I never liked using strict decades like the 60's or the 80's. These are approximate decades.
  • Decade 1 - 1956 to 1964
  • Decade 2 - 1965 to 1975
  • Decade 3 - 1976 to 1985
  • Decade 4 - 1986 - 1995
  • Decade 5 - 1996 - 2005
  • Decade 6 - 2006 - now
Sometimes within a decade there may be an emphasis on a particular style of music such as soul or psychedelic.

Songs by Years
These mixes collect songs released during a particular calendar year.  Sometimes I will have a sub category in a year mix such as Ladies Night or Orgone Bliss. For example:
  • Songs 1965
  • Songs 1969
  • Songs 1980
  • Songs 2013
  • Songs 2014 - I Never Wear White (Ladies Night)
  • Songs 2014 - Night Tripper (Orgone Bliss)

Theme Mixes
  • Blues Night - A broad blues based concept of rock; Howin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Johnny Winter, The Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, James Blood Ulmer, North Mississippi Allstars, etc.
  • Country Folk - Mostly classic country, some new country and country rock with folk and pop mixed in.
  • EC 500 - A series of mixes based on Elvis Costello's Vanity Fair list in 2000 that contained his 500 Must-Have albums and listed the best of the best songs. His picks. My sequencing.
  • Eno Cycle - This series of mixes celebrates the music of Brian Eno and includes his songs, the many songs and albums he has produced for other artists, covers of his music by other artists and even some songs about him.
  • Folk Fest - Loosely based on what you would hear at the Philly Folk Festival. Folk, bluegrass, Americana, British folk, singer songwriter and assorted acoustic guitar based music.
  • Funky Beat - Funk, disco, new wave, current dance music, anything with a funky beat. Different times and different genres.
  • Happy Hour - Loud guitars, power pop, garage rock, screamin' funky soul, party music.
  • Heartache - Mostly quiet songs of heartache and loss. Love songs, break-up songs. Songs from different time periods and genres.
  • Ladies Night - I've always had a fondness for women singers and songwriters and these mixes showcase the wide range of women artists in rock, country, folk and jazz.
  • Late Night - A series of mixes for listening late at night. Quiet, hypnotic, reflective, brooding, etc. but can also be loud and forceful at times. It includes songs from many different eras. Often collections of small sets strung together that may suggest night and dreams.
  • Monster Vision - Halloween mixes, science fiction, etc.
  • New Soul - I've always loved soul music and these mixes focus on new soul released during the past decade. Could be called retro-soul, nu-soul, or neo-soul.
  • Night Chill - Groove, lounge, chill, etc.
  • On Stage - Live music that is mixed together to suggest one long continuous concert with many songs and many bands.
  • On The Road - Music about being on the road and not necessarily just music to listen to while driving. Songs about traveling, going home, missing home and just driving.
  • Orgone Bliss - A collection of psychedelic songs, krautrock, space rock and freakbeat that is definitely influenced by Hawkwind.
  • Porch Sittin' - This is a catch all category for theme mixes that sound good sitting on a porch with friends. These mixes encourage conversation and discussion because they tell stories or have interesting themes. Some of my mixes of interesting cover versions are included here. These mixes tend to be folk or Americana, rootsy, bluegrass, country, etc.
  • Protest Songs - Songs about war and peace from the Vietnam War to the Iraq War.
  • Reflections - Quiet songs about life and love.
  • Reggae Night - Reggae and dub. Mostly classic.
  • Soul Time - Soul music, R&B. Mostly 50's, 60's and '70's.
  • Swing Night - A collection of jazz mixes. Some fusion too.
  • Morning Mist - Quiet music for quiet mornings from across all genres. Based on the WXPN Sleepy Hollow weekend morning show in Philly.
  • Versions - Sometimes I create a mix of songs that are collections of different versions than are generally known. They could be cover versions by another artists, alternate versions by the original artist or live versions. Often times they are part of another theme or decade mix and I put the secondary theme in parenthesis. Example Happy Hour (Versions)
  • WOW Sounds - Wine on Wednesday; a backyard/porch weekly party that happens in our neighborhood during the warm months. Usually about 40 to 60 people with a very wide range of age groups. There is not always music at these gatherings but when there is... here it is.
  • Xmas Night - Christmas songs from across time and genres.
  • Backyard Wedding Party - This is a series of mixes created for my son's backyard wedding party. About ten hours of music that all got played.

Sometimes a mix may cross themes and times.
