Vinyl Spins - Peel Slowly
Listening to some Velvet Underground up on the 3rd floor today. Someone tried to peel the banana on this album during a party at my house in 1974. I saw the Velvet Underground perform in a park "be-in" in 1968 a few months after I had bought this record. I was disappointed when there was no Nico on the stage. I was far enough away from the performance that I really don't remember much about it other than the sound system sucked. They were also playing mostly songs from what I would later realize was their new album White Light White Heat and in retrospect I should have got as close to the stage as possible. A few years later I saw Lou Reed at the Main Point in Philly when I was home for Christmas right after Transformer was released in 1972 and then again the following May in Norfolk with that great touring band from Rock 'n' Roll Animal. RIP Lou Reed.

Vinyl Spins - Bitches Brew
I was recently listening to some Miles Davis albums while enjoying one of my favorite dark beers Bitches Brew by Dogfish Head Brewery. In 1970 I saw him perform the music of this album at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago along with several rock bands. I was really surprised by the intensely loud wall of sound coming from his band and especially from the many keyboard and percussion players. It was a revelation and I had to go and find out more about this electric Miles which of course also eventually led me to Jack Johnson, In a Silent Way, On the Corner, etc. etc. and the more recent released "Complete" box sets of those albums.

Vinyl Spins - Compilations
Greatest hits and other compilations.
I always loved a good greatest hits compilations and many of my early album purchases were collections such as Jimi Hendrix's Smash Hits, The Four Seasons' Golden Vaults and many Motown hits packages. The Kink Kronicles, released in 1972, was a different kind of compilation and quickly became one of my favorite all time albums.
The Kinks had switched to a new record company and their old label released this album compiled by a group of rock journalists specifically for the American market. The album's unique perspective reflects it's creation and does not contain many of the early standard songs from their Greatest Hits album but does provide songs from 1966 to 1971 including some previously unreleased tracks.
I don't think there were many compilation albums released in the 60's and 70's that contained this kind of view of a artist or group using non-hits and unreleased material. That would happen later with the introduction of multiple disc box sets in the late 80's followed by the many deluxe reissue sets of the 90's and beyond. I got hooked then and now.

Glass of Beer - Three Philosophers
Shoveled some snow, made a mix and now it's time to finish this fine brew while watching some Mozart in the Jungle. Ommegang is one of my favorite breweries and I love everything they make. This is a new version of their Three Philosophers Belgian Quadrupel Ale brewed with strawberries and cranberries. Tasty.
Here is more on Mozart in the Jungle.

Vinyl Spins - First Reggae
It was cold up on the third floor today but I got some work done while spinning the hot reggae sounds of The Harder They Come soundtrack album featuring Jimmy Cliff released in 1972. This was the
first of many reggae albums I would own on vinyl. I saw the film in a
neighborhood repertory theater, the Band Box, in 1973 with some friends and then went looking for the album.
I came to love the reggae
sounds and built a large collection on vinyl and eventually CDs. In the mid to late 70’s we regularly saw Jamaican reggae bands play live at
Grendel’s Lair on South Street in Philly where we spent many long sweaty smokey
nights on the dance floor. Also one of the highlights of my live music
experiences was seeing Bob Marley and the Wailers in concert.
I had made several cruises to the Caribbean islands during my time in the Navy including Jamaica. I heard and saw a lot of calypso, ska and other good time island sounds available to the tourist and servicemen but no dreadlocks, spliffs or hard trance reggae dub beats.
Here are several of my reggae night mixes

Vinyl Spins - Album Cover
I think this is the
only album I’ve ever purchased where I knew nothing about the band, the
producer or anything else other than I liked the cover. The Chocolate
Watchband’s The Inner Mystique, released in 1968, was their second album and
would eventually be considered a classic of garage rock and psychedelia. I bought this album in one of those small
head shops that were popular back in 1968 that also sold a few albums along
with the bongs, scarfs, posters and incense. So I was browsing the album bin
and came across this one. I must have been stoned or something.
This became one of my favorite albums of the period and I always carried it around with me when I was spinning records in bars during the 80's for my 60's nights. An interesting note about this album is that the original band from their first album only played on side two here and also only played garage band style cover songs. The spacey psychedelic songs on the first side were performed by the producer and session players. It all sounded good.

Vinyl Spins - Country & Bluegrass
I didn’t grow up
listening to country music. My first real exposure to country radio was during
Navy boot camp where I was totally shocked when the country music station
overwhelmingly won the voting in the barracks for the one hour an evening allotted radio time.
The only "country music" I had heard prior to 1970 was the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo and other similar cosmic cowboy music and some occasional country folk music at the annual Philadelphia Folk Festival. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will The Circle Be Unbroken was the first record I purchased that had real traditional country artists on it and I was hooked. It was a massive three record set that included Roy Acuff, Doc Watson , Merle Travis, Norman Blake, Mother Maybelle Carter, Vassar Clements, and more. I was also now hooked on bluegrass too and around that time we regularly went to the Wheel Pump Inn to see live bluegrass music located just outside the city in Erdenheim on Bethlehem Pike . Interesting to note that the Wheel Pump Inn had been a drinking establishment since 1735. We certainly spent a lot of time in that place keeping the tradition going.
In general, I hate modern pop country radio and avoid it like the plague but over the years I've collected a large number of a albums from country artist like George Jones, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and the many artist under the outlaw country label. I also have collected many artists labeled alternative country too. This is the album that got me started.

Vinyl Spins - 3rd Street Jazz Impressions
Back on the 3rd floor today spinning some records. Jazz. Becky and I had begun
exploring jazz in the mid 70’s. We listened a lot to Temple U’s radio station where they played serious jazz at the time with an emphasis on hard bop. We soon realized that the place to learn about jazz and buy records was 3rd Street Jazz in downtown Philly which had opened in 1972.
The first time we walked in there was a revelation seeing an entire wall displaying nothing but John
Coltrane albums. It was awesome and turned out to be a great place to hang out. The staff was very knowledgeable and were
excited to make recommendations. I bought two albums that first day. John
Coltrane’s Impressions and Art Blakey’s Moanin’. We ended up buying a lot of jazz there. A year or so later the store
opened their basement for selling punk and new wave records. We went to that
store many times up until we left the area in 1979. It was sad to hear of their
closing in 1997.

Heart of Gold - Songs 1972
This mix continues the classic rock of 1972 but also includes some of the singer songwriter genre and the country rock sounds that would be known as cosmic cowboy.
It is also interesting to hear Nick Drake and Big Star among their peers.
1972 may seem a little early for Hall & Oates but not for a Philly kid. These mixes always use music from my collection released in the designated year. These are always highly personal views of the year and in no way should be considered "best of" or exhaustive listings. They are snapshots of my year in music.
